West Indies master blaster Chris Gayle equalled the record for the fastest ever Twenty20 half-century in the Australian Big Bash League.

Gayle brought up his fifty off just twelve balls to equal the mark set by Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh against England at the 2007 World Twenty20.

He blasted seven sixes off 12 balls, eventually dismissed for 56 from 17 deliveries.

Commentator Kevin Pietersen was quick to pick up on Gayle's form, saying the big man was due for a big knock judging by the swagger as he walked out to the crease.

"There is something in his stride here, gentlemen," Pietersen said as Gayle flicked his first shot away for two runs.

Gayle's knock wasn't enough though as his Melbourne Renegades went down to the Adelaide Strikers, who move into the semi-finals along with the Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars, and Perth Scorchers
