The Crusaders have never lacked for talent in the backline, particularly at first five-eighth.

But this season they'll be without the familiar names of Dan Carter, Colin Slade and Tom Taylor.

Richie Mo'unga is one of three candidates for the vacant position, along with Marty McKenzie and Ben Volavola.

After two seasons on the fringes of the Waratahs, Fijian international Volavola is keen to lock in a spot in the starting fifteen.

The trio boats only eighteen Super Rugby caps between them, but despite the lack of experience coach Todd Blackadder likes the potential of the young trio.

Blackadder has a bigger headache with his midfield.

Ryan Crotty could be out until April with a thumb injury, while Robbie Fruean suffered a pectoral strain in the GYM last month and will miss the start of the season.

Blackadder's next decision will be to pick his leadership group, which he'll announcement next week.
