Eccentric West Indies batsman Chris Gayle has landed himself in hot water once again after making his second high-profile error of judgement in just over a week during Australia's Big Bash competition.

Gayle had already received heavy criticism and a $10,000 fine for flirting on live television with Channel Ten reporter Mel McLaughlin – the Twenty20 superstar complimenting McLaughlin on her eyes and asking her out for a drink, before telling her "don't blush, baby".

But now the Melbourne Renegade has more than just claims of sexism to deal with, after he was blasted for not taking a simple run in his side's match against the Sydney Thunder.

After hitting the ball out to a fielder on the long-on boundary, the 36-year-old inexplicably refused to move from his crease amid cries of disbelief from the commentators.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting expressed his disgust at the incident, describing Gayle's no-run as "the most unbelievable, ridiculous cricket I've ever seen".

"What sort of message does that send to the boys on the sideline?" he queried.

To make matters worse, Gayle was caught in the slips the very next ball – and duly received a passionate send-off from Sydney Thunder bowler Clint McKay.
