Kiwi Olympic champion Lisa Carrington has won the women's K1 500m final at the national championships at Lake Karapiro.

After winning her eighth K1 200m title on Friday, Carrington secured the double with an impressive sprint to the line to comfortably outrun her main rival, world ocean ski champion Teneale Hatton.

"There were a lot of nerves there, so to have the performance I wanted to is great," said the 26-year-old. "It's one step towards the Olympics really."

The Olympic champion wasn't holding back on the competition, dismissing any suggestion she may have been holding something back.

"I definitely did it the best I could. There's no being soft because the other girls are going really well, so I have to be at my best."

"It's about everyday trying to get better, trying to get closer to my potential."
