Tony Brown has no intentions taking over as Highlanders head coach next season.
The former All Blacks first five-eighth is seen as a logical replacement for Jamie Joseph who is leaving his post to coach Japan after the 2016 Super Rugby season.
Brown is staying with the Dunedin-based franchise, but not as the head coach.
"I've re-signed for next year," Brown told RadioLIVE.
"I've re-signed as the attack coach again, so that's the job I love doing and obviously we're looking for a head coach at the moment."
Former Wallabies and Crusaders coach Robbie Deans has been touted as an option for the Highlanders but Brown says that's unlikely.
"I'm pretty sure Robbie's not in the picture, but you never know."
With Deans and Brown both opting out, current assistant coach Scott McLeod could be an option to take over in 2017.
The Highlanders are currently second in the New Zealand Super Rugby Conference and take on the Waratahs in Sydney on Friday night.
