Jason Roy smashed his way to 78 as England made light-work of New Zealand's total to win by seven wickets.

After restricting New Zealand to 153-8, England made a sprinters start to the run chase, notching 60-0 off the first five overs as they pounded the New Zealand bowlers.

New Zealand needed early wickets but Roy and Alex Hales (20) shared an 82-run stand.

Roy needed just 26 balls to reach his half-century, and when he was eventually bowled by Ish Sodhi, the damage was done.

Sodhi removed England captain Eoin Morgan with the next ball to give New Zealand a beat, but Jos Buttler came to the crease and smashed three sixes to ease the English to victory.

Sodhi had figures of 2-42 with his return soured by his final over which went for 22 runs.

England won the toss and sent the Black Caps into bat on a pitch suitable for a large target.

After opener Martin Guptill (15) fell in the third over, Colin Munro (46) added 74 runs with skipper Kane Williamson (32) to lay the foundation for a big total.

England then applied the brakes on scoring with some disciplined bowling and tight fielding, claiming regular wickets with catches in the deep to peg back their unbeaten opponents.

Corey Anderson made 28 down the order but New Zealand eventually fell well short of the 175-mark that looked in their reach at the halfway stage.

Ben Stokes claimed 26-3 and produced a run out off the final ball as New Zealand scored only 20 runs in the last four overs.

England will play the winner of Friday morning's semifinal between India and the West Indies.
