The Hammers took the lead through a spectacular free-kick from Dimitri Payet, that curled into the corner and left Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea no chance in goal.
However, the hosts managed to find themselves and equaliser in the 82nd minute when Anthony Martial snuck in at the back post to turn across home.
No date has yet been announced for the replay at Upton Park, with Manchester United's Europa League schedule still unknown.
They will host Liverpool in the second leg of their last 16 clash, trailing 2-0 after the first leg at Anfield.
