Kiwis and Penrith Panthers centre Dean Whare is likely out for the season with a knee injury.

Panthers boss Phil Gould broke the news on Twitter that suggests Whare could have torn his ACL.

Whare was expected to return from a calf injury against the Panthers against Canberra on Saturday.

"Whare was due back from a calf tear this weekend against Canberra but suffered a knee injury at training on Wednesday.

"Gould posted on Twitter that Whare will undergo scans on Thursday for a suspected torn ACL, which will end the Kiwi international's season.

"Whare has made one NRL appearance for the Panthers in 2016, with two separate calf injuries keeping him sidelined for extended periods."

The 15-Test Whare played in all three matches against England at the end of 2015.
