Former All Blacks lock Ali Williams is returning to rugby, 18 months after hanging up his boots.

The 35-year-old has been acting as a media advisor to his former teammate Dan Carter, now he's joining him on the playing roster at French Top 14 champions Racing 92.

"It's one of those things when you chuck the game in you think 'that's me' and you have no desire to get back playing," Williams told the rugby podcast on Sky Sport UK.

"But if you keep around the game and stay involved and when the body has had it's time to recuperate, you think there are possibilities you could go again.

"It was talked about for a long time through the course of the year and we decided it would be a good option to come back.

"Look for me personally, I'm really excited to get another opportunity to play, play with some great guys, and play with a club that's got a lot of long-term future."

Williams added that he spent time pondering if a return was the best option because he didn't want to tarnish what he'd already achieved in the game.

"You don't want to come back and ruin what was a great 15 years. So let's hope the added one, the plus one, is just as good as the last one."

Williams played 77 Tests for the All Blacks and was part of the 2011 World Cup winning team.
