Dustin Johnson has won the US Open and clinched his first golfing major.

Johnson stormed to the finish as he dropped his second shot on the 18th two feet from the pin in front of the clubhouse.

Sinking the birdie putt, Johnson was overcome with emotion after winning his first major and finishing five-under.

He will move up to third in the world rankings, above Rory McIlroy.

Johnson started the day behind Ireland's Shane Lowry, who had a woeful final round and dropped out of contention.

Lowry hit three straight bogeys from the 14th to the 16th hole after missing gettable putts.

The Irishman started with a four-shot lead, but saw his advantage evaporate as he hit 7 bogeys.

New Zealand's Danny Lee finished tied for 57th at 14 over, while Tim Wilkinson rounded out in 61st at 16 over.

Lee, ranked 43rd in the world, had completed the storm-affected first round in a tie for seventh place after battling round in one-under 69.

But it was all downhill after that, Lee carding seven-over 77 for the second round before finishing with back-to-back 74s for a four-round tally of 14-over 294 and a share of 57th place.

Wilkinson's best round in his major debut was his opening 71, as he went on to shoot three successive 75s and take a share of 61st place.
