Germany have left Northern Ireland nervously awaiting their fate at Euro 2016 after the World Cup winners deservedly won 1-0.

Mario Gomez smashed home from 10 yards out in the first half to give Germany the win after an inspired performance from Northern Ireland keeper Michael McGovern kept his side in touch.

Germany, who finished top of Group C with seven points, attempted a whopping 28 shots, but McGovern produced eight saves that kept his side in with a chance.

Germany advance from the section with seven points from three games and a better goal difference than Poland, who beat already-eliminated Ukraine 1-0 to qualify in second place.

Northern Ireland, making their first appearance at a European Championship, finished third on three points and may still reach the knockout stage as one the four best third-placed teams although their fate is out of their hands.

They will go through if the Czech Republic do not beat Turkey later this morning, and if that result goes against them, there is still hope Thursday's (NZT) results could fall in their favour.
