Danny Lee's chances of picking up an Olympic medal in Rio have been strengthened with the withdrawal of world No.3 Jordan Spieth.

International Golf Federation has Lee ranked as the 12th best golfer heading to the Olympics.

Lee, who is expected to see his world ranking move up to 40th after his third-place finish at the Scottish Open, has seen his chances get better by the day as players pull out.

Australia's world No.1 Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy had all previously said they would not be competing in the event.

American Bubba Watson is currently ranked as the top golfer, with Sweden's Henrik Stenson second and American Rickie Fowler third.

Masters winner Danny Willett and fellow Great Britain representative Justin Rose are fourth and fifth respectively.

Lee is likely to be joined at the Olympics by New Zealand's second best golfer Ryan Fox, however he is yet to be named by the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

If Fox is confirmed by the NZOC on Monday, he'd be ranked as the 44th best player at Rio.

World no.1 Lydia Ko is the top ranked women's player.
