New Zealand's doubles specialist Michael Venus has fallen just short of the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

Venus and his Croatian partner Mate Pavic lost the deciding fifth set 16-14 to third seeds Jamie Murray of Scotland and Bruno Soares of Brazil, after their third round match stretched over five hours and two days.

It matches his effort at Wimbledon last year.

But this year the tall 28-year-old can look forward to a doubles campaign at the Rio Olympics.

He'll hook up with Davis Cup teammate Marcus Daniell for the Games.

"That was something I didn't think was going to happen," said Venus.

"It's another great thing that's happened this week being selected for Rio. I'm really excited for that".

Venus has two more tournaments with Pavic before the big switch to Rio.

"You'd love to potentially get a medal but there's great teams in there. I think first of all Marcus and I just need to get on the court and get used to each other.

"We've got an idea of how each other plays, and practiced with each other a few times too.

"It won't be a huge adjustment and I'm Looking forward to it".
