The Cronulla Sharks were held to an 18-18 draw by the Gold Coast Titans on Monday night, a result that left coach Shane Flanagan feeling hollow.

Neither team could find a winning point in two halves of extra time, despite both having opportunities to secure the win with several field goal attempts being charged down.

The game, which ended the Sharks hopes of a 16th consecutive victory, only enhanced Flanagan's belief that the game should do away with golden point as he turned his focus on the referees.

"It's an absolute lottery isn't it?," Flanagan said.

"They were all offside. We were offside. There was chargedowns. Penalties should have been given. It's a joke golden point. It's an absolute joke.

"Just throw all the rules out because there are no rules in golden point."

Sharks captain Paul Gallen, who only played one half of extra time, echoed his coach's thoughts.

"The referees definitely put the whistle in the pocket, but that's just the way it is," said Gallen. "It happens for both sides."

Sharks five-eighth James Maloney had the best chance to win the game in golden point, but saw his field goal attempt come crashing back off the post.

The result leaves the Sharks on top of the NRL ladder, just one point clear of Melbourne.
