American Simone Manuel has become the first black female to take out an Olympic gold medal for swimming - but there was something else that made the race special.
Canada's Penny Oleksiak also claimed gold - with both women finishing the 100m freestyle in 52.70 seconds to become the first athletes in the last five Olympics to win a joint swimming gold medal.
Adding to the incredulity of their achievement, the pair also share a new Olympic record following their impressive swim, beating the 52.71-second record Australian Cate Campbell earned in her semi-final race.
Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjostrom won bronze - while Campbell faded badly after leading at the halfway point to finish sixth, with her sister Bronte coming fourth.
Both Manuel and Oleksiak are young to have won their first Olympic gold medals, at 20 and 16 years of age respectively.
