Video: Rob Waddell weighs in on 'terrible Tuesday' - Rio

New Zealand Olympics chef de mission Rob Waddell was philosophical in reviewing what's been described as 'terrible Tuesday' for his team's athletes.

"Obviously some mixed results today across all sports," noted Waddell.

"Our thoughts are with the athletes. They put so much into this, they try so hard and nobody has higher expectations than themselves."

The day's most glaring disappointment came in the Equestrian, where Sir Mark Todd looked destined to medal in fairy-tale fashion before stumbling on his final run, knocking over four rails to tumble out of contention.

"They've been a really happy group the Equestrian team," said Waddell. "Obviously it hasn't happened for them."

"He [Todd] has had an amazing career, and it's been quite an inspirational to have him around the team. He brings a real calm and sense of maturity."

The former rowing gold medalist has understandably kept a keen eye on the rowers who also fell somewhat short in the early stages, both doubles sculls crews bowing out in heartbreaking fashion.

"We were surprised.

"Sometimes at the Olympics you can have your bad days, but you can have really good days too.

"I'm conscious we've got some great athletes in the team, and plenty more opportunity ahead."
