All Whites defender Tom Doyle excited by World Cup expansion

All Whites defender Tom Doyle says he's excited by news the World Cup could expand to 48 teams in 2026.

The expansion is set to mean direct qualification for Oceania, which would mean New Zealand would only need to get past their Pacific Island neighbours to qualify for the showpiece tournament.

Doyle would be 34 in 2026, with a chance to be involved in the team in that year's tournament.

"It's very exciting for young players coming through, hopefully I will still be around then," Doyle said.

The defender is a part of the current All Whites setup, which is likely to face the fifth ranked South American team for a spot at the World Cup in Russia next year.

However, with a full spot, the All Whites would bypass that match.

"From an outsider, I guess you would see it as an easier path to get to that [2026] World Cup."

"So, for Oceania as a whole, I'd say it's a big step forward for country's development.

"For New Zealand, I think it's massive for that desire for young players to know that there's a really high chance they could be playing on the highest stage that world football has to offer."

Doyle doesn't believe that the addition of teams will cheapen the tournament either.

"I think the more competition the better, you're still going to see the highest calibre of football being played at the tournament with the best players," Doyle added.

"It just gives other countries a chance to showcase their talents."
