Video: Glenn Phillips prepared to keep it simple in Blackcaps debut against South Africa

New Blackcap recruit Glenn Phillips is planning on keeping things very simple when he makes his international T20 debut in Auckland in Friday night.

The 20-year-old has replaced the injured Martin Guptill for the clash against South Africa, who suffered a hamstring injury in training.

Phillips, who was born in South Africa, says he is over the moon to be called up to take on the Proteas, but despite a pressure cooker introduction to the next level it's just another game of cricket.

"See ball, hit ball and do what I do best," he said.

Phillips received the good news late on Tuesday night and said it was one of the highlights of his life.

Guptill to miss start of South African series

I got a call from Gavin Larsen and it was the biggest phone call of my life so far  I can't believe it really."

"Very much out of the blue, I thought Martin Guptill was fully fit, so getting the call that time of the evening was a bit of a shock so I'm really happy about it."

Phillips showed brilliant domestic form in cricket's shortest version, averaging 46.12 in the Super Smash with a strike rate of 142.

Selector Gavin Larsen said the right-hander made a huge impression at such a young age.

"Glenn was outstanding for Auckland at the top of the order," said Larsen.

"He bats with power; has shown he can clear the rope and gets a deserved opportunity to showcase his skills on the international stage."

Larsen told Phillips that they want him to play his natural game in front of his home crowd.

"I haven't been given any expectations, which is nice on new shoulders," said Phillips.

Despite playing for the Aces, Phillips has only played on Eden Park's outer oval, so to play at one of the country's most iconic venues is an honour and he hopes to make the most of the shortest straight boundaries in international cricket.

The former sacred Heart College student has also chucked his name forward for the IPL auction later this month and is hoping Friday night will put him in the shop window for a lucrative contract.

"After having an okay Super Smash I thought why not.  It would be a bit of learning experience over in India if I am selected."

"I'd definitely like to put my name out there so this is the perfect opportunity for it."
