Warriors super-fan the Mt Smart Joker looks ahead to new season

He's the New Zealand Warriors' biggest fan - except, he tells me, for Sir Peter Leitch.

The Mt Smart Joker has been wearing his iconic face paint to make himself look like Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight Rises since 2012 - and it's all out of his adoration for the NRL's only Kiwi team.

He attended the NRL grand final in 2011 - the end of an exciting year for the Warriors that saw them pipped by the Manly Sea Eagles for the Premiership - and he says it was that which first piqued his interest in painting his face.

"At the end of [2011], when I came back, I'd had such a great time … and I wasn't content doing the same thing year-in, year-out - and I said to myself, 'How am I gonna help the boys get back to a grand final?'

"Millions of people around the world attend sports games wearing face paint. And I said to my boys, 'What do you think?'"

His kids are massive wrestling fans, so their first response was to try and get their dad to paint his face in a similar fashion to the likes of WWE competitors Jeff Hardy and Sting - but out of laziness and a propensity to have a few drinks before games, he opted for the much less complicated face of the Joker.

His continued wearing of the paint later that year saw him win a Warriors super-fan competition run by the club - and from there sprung a widespread following. The Mt Smart Joker now has thousands of followers on social media.

He says finding his seat when he arrives at Mt Smart Stadium can sometimes take him up to an hour, with people constantly coming up to chat and request photos. He says the car ride to the game is often packed with people driving past waving and giving him strange looks.

But he believes the effort he puts in is all worthwhile, claiming his and other fans' passion for the team helps them to perform on the field - and while the Warriors' performances in recent years have been less than memorable, he has never struggled staying loyal.

"They will always be my team. Every year at this time I have a good feeling that this is gonna be our year - and at the back end of the season, when things don't go our way, my loyalty is unwavering," he explains.

"I will always support the team, but I am really critical of the performances. Our fan base is really critical - you only have to jump on some Facebook pages to see the types and levels of critique there are."

Whilst he says he always has a good feeling at this time, his optimism ahead of the 2017 season is even stronger this time around. The Joker says the Warriors have plenty going for them that they haven't always had.

"My expectation for the team is top eight, at the least. We have a good enough roster to finish in the top four. The way the club is set up, some key personnel and [coach] Stephen Kearney bring another dimension.

"I think that we can go all the way this year."

And if they do that, and reach the grand final like they did in 2011, the Joker says he'll consider taking off his iconic face paint for good.

The New Zealand Warriors kick off their season against the Newcastle Knights at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
