Melbourne Cup-winning Australian jockey Michelle Payne has allegedly tested positive for a banned substance and has been stood down from racing as a result.

Payne was the first female jockey to win the prestigious annual Thoroughbred horse race, riding 100-1 shot Prince of Penzance to victory in 2015.

According to Australian media, a urine test conducted earlier this month returned a positive result for the banned substance phentermine, an appetite suppressant.

As a result, she's been stood down from racing and trackwork.

A Racing Victoria inquiry will now take place and Payne will face the inquiry on Thursday.

She was advised of the positive test last Friday.

Other jockeys guilty of the same offence have faced a one- to two-month ban.
