Cricket match abandoned after crossbow fired onto pitch

A cricket match in England has been suspended between Surrey and Middlesex after a 12-inch metal bolt was fired onto the pitch.

Play was immediately suspended and The Oval was evacuated following the incident.

Spectators watching the match were urged to take cover after the projectile - which Middlesex described as a "crossbow bolt" on its Twitter feed - landed on the square. Players were also taken off the field.

London's Metropolitan Police said there are no reported injuries and as yet no arrests made. The incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.

Police said it is believed the bolt came from outside the ground.

The match was later abandoned, and declared a draw.

Surrey Cricket chief executive Richard Gould said the incident could have been much worse.

"It is pure speculation where it came from because it is a very dense area around the ground," he said.

"We are investigating reports that there was a noise on the roof of the OCS Stand but we haven't been able to get up there to see whether it was the projectile ricocheting off the roof or a separate projectile.

"We may never find out if it was a deliberate act, but in these heightened times these sorts of acts are wholly irresponsible"

"It's just a very sad incident, but it could have been far, far worse."
