Kiwi netballer Grace Rasmussen believes she has no choice but to play for the Northern Stars next season, despite wanting to stay on with Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic.
The 29-year-old was an integral part of the Magic's mid-court for four seasons - known for her lightning speed passes and nous to feed shooters the ball on demand. But it wasn't enough to secure her spot for 2018.
"It was a tough one; they gave me an opportunity to play for them again and after a few discussions back and forth in terms of negotiations I really felt we were making some progress." says Rasmussen.
"Magic was a good team for me to return to but unfortunately they retracted their offer the day after I had given them the heads-up so that was a wee bit disappointing."
Waikato Bay of Plenty coach Margaret Forsyth admits losing Rasmussen is a big loss, but says deadlines and salary caps are policies she cannot change.
"In the end we gave her and her agent an extended deadline and she didn't make it and we moved on to another option," says Forsyth.
"Negotiations were going well but we have a timeframe to work within as well as the salary cap...it's an issue for everyone.
"It is sad to see her go but this is professional sport."
Rasmussen is currently in Silver Ferns camp hoping she has more luck with selections there, and admits it's a little awkward having both Magic and Stars players with her.
"It's always a funny time, negotiations. Everyone is quite secret squirrel about where they're going and where they've come from, but it's part and parcel." says Rasmussen.
The new recruit is not only the newest named for the Northern Stars, she's the only player announced for the south Auckland franchise, with all rosters set to be finalised by August 24.
