More engine problems have seen Kiwi driver Brendon Hartley qualify 13th fastest at the Mexico Formula 1 Grand Prix.
The 27-year-old was building nicely before his Toro Rosso car ran out of power during the second qualifying session.
If the Toro Rosso camp are unable to fix the engine and they insert a new one, he will encounter another grid penalty.
The Manawatu native has been hampered by engine problems all weekend, which saw him only complete 10 laps during the first practice session on Saturday (NZ time).
Hartley hopes it is nothing series as he prepares for his second race in Formula 1.
"A little bit frustrating," Hartley said. "I didn't 100 percent get it together in Q1 so I was pretty excited about Q2.
"I braked into turn one and felt like I got it spot on, and then there was a big bang and there was nothing I can do about that.
"I don't really know [what the problem is]. Everything is really new for me."
His teammate Pierre Gasly did not compete in qualifying as his car is also struggling with engine problems and will start from the back of the grid.
Sebastien Vettel will start on pole for the 50th time in his career, ahead of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
