Former Kiwis forward Logan Swann backs New Zealand to make Rugby League World Cup final

Former Kiwis star Logan Swann believes New Zealand have the players to make the Rugby League World Cup grand final.

The Kiwis are arguably in the toughest pool in the tournament, featuring two top five opponents - Scotland and Samoa - plus Tonga, ranked 11th.

Plus, both Samoa and Tonga have gotten stronger, with a number of high-profile players choosing to represent the island nations over the likes of New Zealand and Australia.

Despite the defection, Swann is confident coach David Kidwell's men will make their way to the tournament decider.

"I think they have the side to do that," said Swann. "I don't want to put them on the spot - but I know they can do it and I believe the team have the side to do it.

"I think that it is vital that we perform really well. If we get beat on the day in the grand final cause of the bounce of the ball or the other team having one of those days then so be it.

"But it is crucial that our sides perform really well and wear the jersey with pride. That is what every Kiwis fan is hoping for."

Swann played 29 Tests for the Kiwis and 273 NRL and Super League games in his career. He thinks the Kiwis will reach the final, even with a relatively young squad.

They have named four potential debutants in their squad to face Samoa in their opening match on Saturday night.

"The players in some of those positions, especially the forward pack there, have come off some really good form in the NRL and then also into the playoffs.

"I think it will hold the rest of the side in some good stead and they will be able to provide and lay a good platform for the team, and the rest will come off the back of that."

It has nearly been three years to the day since the two nations last faced off, which the Kiwis won 14-12 at Toll Stadium in Whangarei.
