Former test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade hopes Australia don't lose their competitive edge and "try and play like New Zealand" following the ball-tampering scandal last month.

Batsman Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera scuffing the match ball with sandpaper during the third test against the Proteas, which led to massive off-field drama.

As a result, captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and Bancroft were all suspended.

Darren Lehmann, who resigned as coach at the end of the series, suggested that his old side needed to 'take a leaf' out of the Blackcaps book and treat the opposition with more respect.

But Wade doesn't think the Australian cricket team should change the way they are on the field.

"When I got back into the team (2016), there was a lot of media and public stir about how they wanted the team to have a crack through that period. They felt like we were rolling over a little bit," said Wade.

"I hope now we don't go too far the other way and lose all our drive and try and play like New Zealand.

"Every team needs a bit of competitiveness on the field.

"What happened in South Africa wasn't a good look. But I just think we need to be careful about what direction we go in from here."

Wade's views are not shared by the new Australian captain Tim Paine, who has vowed to try and change his side's on-field behaviour.
