NRL heavy-hitters drop in for NZ Kiwis coach interviews

The Kiwis are one step closer to confirming a new coach, after last year's disastrous Rugby League World Cup campaign and David Kidwell's exit from the top job.

Newshub can reveal interviews have taken place in Auckland on Tuesday, with three high-profile NRL coaches making the trip across the ditch.

NSW Origin coach Laurie Daley was keeping tight-lipped over his interview for the NZ national team role.

And he's just one of four top former NRL coaches in the running.

Former Bulldogs coach Des Hasler's also keeping quiet following his meeting with the selection panel, while former Manly coach Geoff Toovey was another to make an appearance at the Auckland airport hotel.

Newshub understands former South Sydney premiership-winning coach Michael Maguire is also among the group and was interviewed yesterday.

He completes a quartet of coaches boasting NRL premierships and Origin titles.

Toovey is the only candidate on the list without a major coaching success to his name, but steered Manly to the Grand Final in 20-13.

And while Daley led the Blues to an historic State of Origin title in 2014, Hasler has the best CV of all, leading Manly to a pair of NRL titles and the Bulldogs to two Grand Finals.

It's set to be a busy couple of days for the selection panel, which includes former Kiwis Monty Betham and Dean Bell, and former Kiwis coach Frank Endacott, as well as former Silver Ferns coach Wai Taumaunu, with a decision expected early next month.

And with the June test against England in Denver just around the corner, there's plenty of work to be done for whoever is given the role of trying to turn around the Kiwis struggles.
