Kiwi Scott Dixon has avoided the late carnage to finish third at the Indianapolis 500 Indycar event on Monday morning.

Australian rival Will Power drove a perfect strategic race for his first victory - and the first by an Aussie - at the iconic Indycar event, with pole-sitter Ed Carpenter three seconds back and Dixon third.

Placings fluctuated wildly throughout the 200-lap journey around Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with eight crashes taking their toll.

Among the casualties was motorsport pioneer Danica Patrick - the only woman to win an Indycar Series race in Japan 2008 - who was driving her last race before retiring.

Another was three-time race winner Helio Castroneves, who crashed in pit lane late in the race.

With 12 laps to go, Tony Kanaan also spun out, setting up what would prove the race-deciding stoppage. Leaders Oriol Servia and Stefan Wilson chose to stay out on the track, rather than refuel, and were forced to pit within sight of the finish.

That allowed Power through to victory.
