Former All Blacks fullback Leon MacDonald is set to join the Blues as senior assistant coach for next season.

The official announcement will take place at Blues headquarters on Wednesday afternoon, and Newshub understands head coach Tana Umaga will retain his role for at least another season.

MacDonald was the assistant coach to Scott Robertson at the Crusaders, winning the 2017 Super Rugby title, but left the role just one year into his two-year contract.

The 40 year-old started his coaching career with the Tasman Mako in 2010, before taking over as head coach in 2016 and finishing runner-up twice to Canterbury in the Mitre 10 Cup.

MacDonald had extended his contract with Tasman until the end of 2019, but will leave his post after this season to concentrate on his new role with the Blues.
