All Blacks great Ma'a Nonu has put his rugby career on hold for family reasons.

The 36-year-old has left French club Toulon where he's made 77 appearances since retiring from international rugby in 2015.

Nonu released a statement on social media stating that he wants some personal time to mull over his future in the game.

"I have decided to take a step back from rugby to spend time with my family and assess my options for the future," Nonu wrote.

"My family and I would like to thank all those who have supported us during our three seasons at Rugby Club Toulonnais.

"Thank you to the fans who have always shown unconditional support."

There were reports out of France in April that the two-time World Cup winner was set to extend his contract with the French giants.

RMC Sport in France speculated a two year extension had been verbally agreed between Nonu and club president Mourad Boudjellal, but no contract had been signed.

Toulon released a statement on their website on Wednesday morning (NZT).

"Toulon warmly thanks Ma'a Nonu for his involvement and commitment during his three seasons and wishes him and his family the best moving forward."
