Cycling: Bullying still a concern for sprint squad members

High Performance Sport New Zealand is addressing fresh concerns over the handling of allegations against former Cycling New Zealand sprint coach Anthony Peden.

Despite Peden's swift exit this week, there are lingering concerns about the culture of the programme.

Newshub understands that a squad member has raised fears that the bullying they say they've experienced in the past may still linger at upcoming events despite the coaching change.

There is a feeling that the athlete Peden was allegedly having an affair with will continue to make other squad members feel uncomfortable and potentially attribute blame for the allegations becoming public.

Newshub understands that the athlete in question had previously attempted to have certain riders removed from the squad.

High Performance Sport has been quick to respond to the simmering scandal.

"Athlete welfare has to be paramount," a spokesperson told Newshub.

"The New Zealand Cycling Team is managed by Cycling NZ, and I have referred this matter to their chairman.

“He has assured me that Cycling NZ will take appropriate action."

Cycling New Zealand has confirmed it will speak to all squad members before they depart for Europe.
