New Zealand golfer Lydia Ko's putter was on fire as she struck one of her best rounds of 2018, to storm into contention at the Women's PGA Championship in Illinois.

Ko started the day at two-over par in 86th place, but responded with a six-under 66 to surge up the leaderboard, finishing her round in a tie for seventh.

At risk of missing thecut, eight birdies landed the 21-year-old a spot on the leaderboard.

"I hit the ball better yesterday, but that shows how important putting is," Ko said. "I couldn't get anything rolling so to be able to make a birdie on the first hole was a huge momentum changer.

"That way I felt that there were birdies out there rather than trying to chase the pars."

The round left her trailing clubhouse leaders So Yeon Ryu, Brooke Henderson, and Sung Hyon Park by two shots.

"I said first of all my goal was to make the cut and that way I wasn't getting too ahead of myself, not trying to push myself to play extremely well and that was a really good mindset going into today.

"At a major championship, even though everyone's playing 72 holes, it almost feels a little longer, so you have to take one shot at a time, really be patient out there and hopefully I'll be able to combine those things and have a good weekend."
