The NZ Warriors have paved the way for front rower Albert Vete to possibly join the Melbourne Storm, after confirming his release on Friday.

The 25-year-old Mate Ma'a Tongan representative’s mid-season move sees him end his stint with the New Zealand-based club after 46 NRL appearances, since his debut in 2015.

"We really appreciate the contribution Albie has made to the club both on the field and off it," said Warriors general manger, Brian Smith.

“He was among a group of players who came through the system in 2015 and finishes just short of the 50-games milestone. We wish Albie and his family all the best for the future."

Reports in Australia suggest Vete is close to a deal with the Storm.

Vete joined the Warriors from a rugby union background, captaining the St Kentigern College first XV to an Auckland secondary schools title in 2011.

He made 37 NYC appearances for the Junior Warriors in 20212 and 2013, before joining the club's wider NRL squad in 2014.

The Warriors also confirmed the re-signings of assistant coaches, Stacey Jones and Tony Iro to the end of the 2020 season.

Jones was appointed an assistant coach when Stephen Kearney was signed as the club’s new head coach following the 2016 season while Iro re-joined the NRL football staff this year after previously filling the assistant coach’s role with Ivan Cleary, Brian McClennan and Andrew McFadden.

"Stacey and Tony have done a wonderful job in their roles and in challenging the group to constantly improve," said Kearney.

"They bring tremendous experience with their playing backgrounds and are constantly looking to develop as coaches.

"From a club viewpoint it’s also really important that we have some continuity with our football staff so it’s terrific that we’ve been able to keep Stacey and Tony on board."
