One-armed fighter Nick Newell falls short in UFC bid

Disabled MMA fighter Nick Newell has come up short in his bid to earn a UFC deal.

On Wednesday (NZ time), Newell lost a unanimous decision to Alex Munoz as part of UFC president Dana White’s 'Contenders' series, where a full-time contract with the world’s most famous MMA promotion was on the line.

The 32-year-old American was born with a congenital amputation of his left arm, which ends just below the elbow.

Known as 'Notorious' inside the cage, Newell has defied the odds, using his grappling-based game to make his way to a 14-2 professional record, which includes nine submissions and two knockouts.

White schedules the weekly fight card as a way of discovering new talent and has already unearthed a handful of gems, including bantamweight phenom Sean O’Malley.
