Football World Cup: Belgian chocolates trump Brazilian theatrics

  • 03/07/2018

The 2018 Football World Cup produced perhaps its defining match to date, with Belgium rallying from two goals behind to pip Japan in injury time.

"We're so lucky to be watching and be witness to this World Cup," insists Newshub football reporter and former NZ international goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe.

"It's produced so many upsets and great games, and the penultimate round of Round-of-16 was no different.

"That Belgium game, to come back from 2-0 down to Japan and win 3-2 in injury time… I'm sure Belgium believed they could do it, but to actually do it was pretty special.

"I wouldn't think it was an unfair result either."

On the flip side, Neymar's theatrics in Brazil's win over Mexico probably overshadowed his side's progress to the quarter-finals.

"That's got a lot of people talking today and the Mexican coach made a point of mentioning it in the press conference afterwards," says O'Keeffe.

"At the end of the day, that wasn't the winning or losing of this match. Yes, it taints the sport unfortunately, but at the end of the day, Brazil were comfortable and deserving victors."
