Football World Cup: England edge Colombia on penalties to advance

England have booked their spot in the Football World Cup quarter-finals with a dramatic win on penalties against Colombia in Moscow.

With the score locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation and extra time, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford stepped to the fore, making a critical shoot-out save to lay the platform for Eric Dier's winner.

It's the first time England have won a penalty shootout at a World Cup, having lost their previous three.

"I was in a massive whirlwind, but I saved it with my left hand," Pickford told BBC Sport.

"I've been criticised for going with my top hand, but as long as you save it, that's all that counts. I might be young, but I've got good mental strength and experience, and I used that today."

The contest was marred by bookings and general petulance, particularly by the Colombians, with both teams struggling to create goal-scoring opportunities.

As the first half wound to a close, Colombia's Wilmar Barrios was lucky to escape a red card, after an apparent head butt on Jordan Henderson, as the sides formed a wall for a free-kick.

Captain Harry Kane stepped up to the spot to convert a penalty in the 55th minute, after he was essentially mounted in the box by defender Carlos Sanchez during a setpiece.

With just two minutes remaining in injury time, Yerry Mina soared to head home from a corner and send the match into extra time.

England will now take on Sweden in a quarter-final showdown on Sunday morning (NZ time).
