Football World Cup: Sweden battle past Switzerland to quarter-finals

  • 04/07/2018

Sweden have ground their way to a 1-0 win over Switzerland to advance to the quarter-finals of the Football World Cup.

Emil Forsberg's deflected shot in the 66th minute proved the difference between the two sides at St Petersburg, combining with a stern Swedish defence down the stretch to repel the Swiss offensive.

Janne Anderson's men were unspectacular, but undoubtedly effective yet again to claim a spot in the final eight of the competition for the first time since 1994.

They averaged 38 percent possession in the group stage and achieved just 33 percent against the Swiss, but they probably created more good scoring chances than their opponents.

They were organised and operated with a discipline that allowed them to frustrate the Swiss and try to strike on the counter.

Sweden will now face the winners of the round-of-16 match between England and Colombia.
