Kiwi shotputter Tom Walsh has broken a 30-year-old record to win the prestigious Diamond League final in Zurich on Friday morning (NZ time).
The 26-year-old Timaru builder launched a monster throw of 22.60m with his second attempt to beat out American duo Darrell Hill (22.40m) and Ryan Crouser (22.18m).
Walsh's throw was 18 cm further than the previous meeting record set by American Randy Barnes in 1988 and is the longest-ever heave at a Diamond League competition.
His effort was seven centimetres shy of his national record, set earlier this year in Auckland.
It's the second time Walsh has won the Diamond League title and wraps up an amazing year, where he's won the world indoor and Commonwealth Games titles.
Walsh pockets $NZ 75,000 for winning the title.
