Bledisloe Cup: Australia's Taniela Tupou ruled out with injury

The Wallabies have been struck by a late injury blow ahead of Saturday night's Bledisloe Cup opener against the All Blacks.

Prop Taniela Tupou has been scratched from the side after he suffered a hamstring injury during their final training on Friday.

His place on the bench will be taken by Jermaine Ainsley of the Melbourne Rebels, a 23-year-old native of Cromwell in Otago.

Ainsley moved to Australia after finishing at Otago Boys High School, going on to play for the Western Force before joining the Rebels.

Tupou's loss will be keenly felt by an already depleted Australian front row. Earlier in the week, coach Micahel Cheika was forced to call in Tom Robertson following the loss of key forward Scott Sio.

The 22-year-old, Tongan-born, New Zealand educated Tupou has been a revelation for the Queensland Reds this season and starred for the Wallabies in their June series against Ireland.

Known as "Tongan Thor", he was a schoolboy sensation for Auckland's Sacred Heart College before he opted to head across the Tasman after he confirmed his international allegiance with Australia.

His injury is considered relatively minor and he's expected to be available for the return test at Eden Park next week.
