Sir Mark Todd is leading the prestigious Burghley Horse Trials after the second day of dressage in England.

Todd was in sixth after day one, after scoring 30.8 on NZB Campino, but he bettered that score on Kiltubrid Rhapsody on the second day.

His total of 26.4 put him in top position.

"I'm delighted to be in front at this stage, but there is still a long way to go," Todd said.

"I've had Kiltubrid Rhapsody for two years now and he's gradually growing in confidence within himself.

"He is an impressive horse and there is still plenty more improvement in him to come."

Todd is a five-time winner of the event and last won in 1999.

Fellow New Zealander Tim Price secured second position with his 26.9 performance on Ringwood Sky Boy, relegating day one leader and defending champion Oliver Townend and MHS King Joules to third.

Townend has three horses placed inside the top 10 with Ballaghmor Class and Cooley SRS in fifth and seventh respectively.

The Horse Trials now moves to the cross-country stage which will start on Sunday morning (NZ time).
