Sir Mark Todd is the leading New Zealander in sixth place, after the first day of dressage at the Burghley Horse Trials in England.
Todd trails five British riders, with defending champion Oliver Townsend leading the way.
Oliver sits on a score of 27.2, while Todd has 30.8, but he could have been in the 20s, except for two errors on NZB Campino.
"The horse went really well," said Todd. "He did a really nice test, unfortunately I made two stupid errors.
"One, forgetting the 20 metre circle and that sort of put me off a bit, and I ended up halting at the wrong place in the end, so that didn't help my cause.”
Five-time winner Todd has a second horse in the competition and will ride Kiltubrid Rhapsody, when the dressage continues on Saturday (NZ time).
Sir Mark last won the Burghley Horse Trials in 1999.
Tim Price on Bango is the next best Kiwi in eighth equal on 33.8, while five-time champion Andrew Nicholson is 16th and Caroline Powell 21st equal.
