Kiwi golfer Danny Lee has overcome a rocky second round at the PGA Tour playoffs to make the cut on Friday (Saturday NZ time).

Heading into the round, Lee was in a share of fifth, one shot behind the leaders, but his two-over-par 73 second round saw him drop to a tie of 44th at two-under par,  at the Ridgewood Championship Course in Paramus, New Jersey.

Lee pared the first hole, and then things crumbed when he double-bogeyed the second hole, which was followed up with bogeys on the third, fifth, and eighth, and he slipped below the cut line heading into the back nine.

But the 28-year-old's fortunes changed, when he birdied the 12th, 16th and 18th holes to climb the leaderboard and do enough to reach the third round.

He trails Americans Jamie Lovemark and Brooks Koepka who are joint leaders at 10-under par.

Tiger Woods just made the cut with his second even-par 71 round.

Lee, who headed in the tournament in 103rd place on the PGA Tour standings, needs to finish inside the top 100 to advance to the next round.

Right now, he's projected to be in 108th at the conclusion of the tournament.
