Golf: Wrong Tommy Fleetwood paid Open Championship earnings

British golfer Tommy Fleetwood won $US154,000 (NZ$223,000) for finishing equal 12th at last month's Open Championship at Carnoustie.

Only problem was that the world number 11 never received the money - it was sent to another golfer with the same name.

The money went into the account of Tommy Fleetwood, a 58-year-old golfer club pro at a Florida golf resort.

The mix-up was revealed by the American Fleetwood's friend, Greg Thorner, a teaching pro from Tampa, who posted a photo to his Twitter account.

"My friend Tommy is club pro at the Streamsong Resort in Central Florida and I was with him there today when he received a notification on his cellphone," Thorner told the Telegraph.

"It was only for $14 or something, but he called it up and looked at his statement, and that's when he shouted 'Holy smoke, I've just had US$154,000 paid into my account!'

"He got on to his bank immediately and they didn't know what to say. That's when I realised that it must be for the other Tommy Fleetwood and I quickly worked out that it was his Open winnings."

The European Tour confirmed the error and apologised to the British Fleetwood.

"This was a clerical error which we are resolving and we apologise for the inconvenience caused to both parties," the European Tour said in a statement.

After finishing his round in preparation for the PGA Championship, the 'real' Fleetwood laughed it off.

"I honestly didn't know anything about it," he said.

"I wouldn't even know if I'd been paid or not because I don't really look.

"But I'll get on top of that."
