Recalled Silver Ferns star Laura Langman is hopeful Netball New Zealand changes the eligibility rules, allowing Kiwi players to play overseas.

After taking a break from the sport, Langman was named in the 17-strong Silver Ferns squad for the 2018/19 netball season.

The 32-year-old hasn't played for the Ferns in two years after she was ruled ineligible following her decision to play for Sunshine Coast Lightning in the Australian Super League last season.

After one season across the Tasman, she returned to New Zealand but did not play in the recently completed national premiership as she wanted to start building a career away from netball.

But now she is back, and she holds no grudges over her exile from the national set-up.

Speaking to Silver Ferns TV, Langman hopes the rule changes soon, as her time across the Tasman has helped her grow as a player.

"It would be cool to see it on a case-by-case basis," she said.

'The learning's I've had from working with different coaches and players means I will be a different player.

"I'm excited to see how it all comes together, but I'm under no illusions of how much work has to be done."

During her time away from the sport, the 141 test veteran has been taking part in other sporting events like adventure racing and also focussing on engineering.

She admits she was approached about joining the squad for the Commonwealth Games, but her commitments and dedication to begin planning for life after netball prevented her doing so.

"Over in Australia, there was lots of talk about sports leaving exiting sport and then thinking about 'what's next?' with lots of discussion about mental health.

"I've been passionate about ensuring I had two strings going at the same time and this was a perfect opportunity to concentrate on that second string.

"It is really confronting going into the real world. I knew I had to get in the door sooner rather than later and buckle up for the future.

I wanted to get my feet under the desk because the fairy-tale can't last forever.  There were limited talks I was starting a new position in engineering, and it is one I'm currently in and one I'm excited about so I wanted to put energy into that part of my life."

Being back in the Silver Ferns was something Langman thought would never get the chance to wear the black dress again.

"I'm feeling very lucky and grateful or the opportunity. Not many players get a second chance, and I'm looking forward to the challenge the next few months will bring.

The Ferns will begin preparation from next month's Quad Series which will see them play Australia England and South Africa.     `
