Rugby: Former All Black Piri Weepu fined, disqualified for drink-driving

  • 07/08/2018

Former All Black Piri Weepu has been convicted of drink-driving, after appearing at the Hutt Valley District Court on Tuesday morning.

Hours earlier, Weepu had posted a confession on Instragram, admitting his offence and stating his intention to "take it on the chin".

The court was told he was found slumped behind his steering wheel in the drive-thru at McDonald's in Petone. He faced one charge of driving with excess breath alcohol, after returning a breath test of 600mcg of alcohol on his breath.

The legal limit is 250mcg.

He admitted the charge, and was fined $600, order to pay court costs and disqualified from driving for six months.

Weepu's defence lawyer, Louise Sziranyi, said her client had made a "significant error" and wanted to accept the consquences.

Weepu, who made 73 appearances for the All Blacks and last played for New Zealand in 2013, had tried to have his name suppressed.
