Boxing: Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury set for December title fight

Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury have set a date for their heavyweight title fight.

The two sluggers will clash on December 2 (NZ time), likely in Los Angeles at the Staples Centre, for Wilder's WBC championship.

The two confirmed the fight had been signed on separate social media posts, the same week as Anthony Joshua defends his three world titles against Alexander Povetkin in London on Sunday.

American Wilder (40-0, 39 knockouts) is coming off a stoppage win over the very dangerous Luis Ortiz in March in one of the best heavyweight fights in recent memory.

Wilder was hurt several times by the Cuban in the opening half of the fight, and appeared on the verge of a round-seven stoppage.

But the undefeated Alabama native recovered, dropping Ortiz twice in Round 10, before the fight was halted towards the end of the round.

That victory marked the 39th knockout of Wilder's career, and seemingly positioned him for a unification fight with WBO, IBF and WBA champion Joshua.

But the two heavyweight titans couldn't agree terms and Wilder turned his attention to former division kingpin Tyson Fury (27-0).

Fury is two fights into his comeback, after walking away from the sport in 2015, a year after defeating Vladimir Klitschko for three of boxing's four major titles.

Fury has claimed two trouble-free victories against unheralded opponents in 2018, so the WBC champion represents a big jump in competition.
