Nelson cyclist George Bennett has moved into the top 10 after the ninth stage of the Vuelta a Espana on Monday morning (NZ time).
Bennett finished 10th on the 200km stage, three minutes behind American stage winner Ben King.
King grabbed his second tour win, with a gutsy solo charge on the summit finish, as he broke away with 10km remaining.
Bennett is now 48 second behind new overall leader Simon Yates of Britain, who now holds the red jersey, one second clear of Spain’s Alejandro Valverde.
The 28-year-old Kiwi finished 10th at the Vuelta in 2016, but was forced to pull out after 11 stages last year, due to illness.
Tuesday is the first of two rest days, with the race resuming on Wednesday with a 177km flat route from Salamanca to Fermoselle.
