New Zealander Patrick Bevin has lost the leader's jersey at the Tour of Britain after a disappointing team time trial by his BMC Racing squad on Friday morning (NZ time).
His side finished the 14km course in sixth - 38 seconds behind victors LottoNL-Jumbo.
Bevin has slipped to fourth overall in the general classification, 24 seconds behind new green jersey holder Primoz Rogli of Slovenia.
"We are all really happy - it's a really special moment," Roglic said.
"Getting the jersey was not really a big objective - we just wanted to do a nice team time trial. But as we managed to take it, we will try and defend the jersey in the next days.
"There was quite a lot of communication out on the road because it was a really hard climb. I think all the guys did a really good job, each and every one of them. It's a really nice win."
Saturday's stage six sees the riders take on a 168.3km route from Barrow-in-Furness back to Whinlatter Pass.
Elsewhere, fellow Kiwi George Bennett has dropped one spot to sit 11th after stage 12 of the Vuelta a Espana in Spain.
Bennett crossed the finish line in 29th, more the 11 minutes behind stage winner Alexandre Geniez. The 28-year-old trails new Red Jersey holder Jesus Herrada of Spain by 4m 9s.
Cofidis rider Herrada, 28, took the red jersey from Simon Yates after joining a second breakaway group which finished 2m 32s behind Geniez and over nine minutes ahead of Yates and the other general classification hopefuls.
Saturday's stage 13 takes the riders across a 174.8km route that features one category-three climb and two category-one climbs, including a summit finish on the Alto de la Camperona.
