Netball: Katrina Grant's fall cushioned by Silver Ferns vice-captaincy

Katrina Grant was the public face when the Silver Ferns hit rock bottom at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April.

On Saturday, the Silver Ferns begin a new era, with new players, a new coaching staff of Noeline Taurua and Debbie Matoe, and new captain Laura Langman.

But the forgotten figure in this fresh start is Katrina Grant, who captained the side through Netball New Zealand's darkest days.

"I'm not going to lie, I was very, very nervous coming into this," she told Newshub. "I have never been coached by Noels or Debs before, so I didn't know if they would like me, like the way I'd play.

After 118 tests, the defender has more than proven her worth - but there were other factors.

"The captaincy was obviously up in the air," Grant said. "No-one knew what was going to happen with that, so I was really, really nervous."

She had every reason to be. The captaincy came down to a vote, with players, coaches and management preferring Langman as their new leader.

"There has definitely been some real highs and lows with the captaincy, but Laura deserves it," said Grant.

Head coach Taurua has been impressed with how Grant handled the demotion.

"Katrina is a very passionate person, but also very loyal and supportive of whoever got the role."

But there's a silver lining - Grant was given the nod as vice-captain

"I'm happy that even after everything that's happened over the last couple of months, getting voted in is a vote of confidence for me and they obviously don't mind listening to me."

Grant is no longer the centre of attention, but happy she's still in the circle.
