New Zealand has failed to win a single gold medal at the world rowing championship in Bulgaria.

The Kiwi team added one bronze and one silver on Sunday night (NZ time) to the lone silver won by Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergast in the women's pair the previous day.

Overall, it is New Zealand's lowest medal return since 2003 and the first time since 2001 New Zealand has failed to win gold.

Defending women's double sculls world champs Olivia Loe and Brooke Donoghue claimed silver behind Lithuania.

Loe and Donoghue finished 2.13s behind Lithuanian pair of Milda Valcuikaite and Ivea Adomaviciute, who crossed the line in 6m 44.15s. The US finished third.

Men's double scullers Chris Harris and John Storey took home bronze, after an incredible race to the finish. They were behind early, but a late surge saw them pip Great Britain at the line to finish third, with Switzerland in second and France taking home gold.

French pair Hugo Boucheron and Matthieu Androdias finished 1.55s ahead of New Zealand in 6m 05.160s.

Meanwhile, gold-medal favourite Robbie Manson was well off the pace and missed out on a medal altogether, with a fifth-place finish in the men's single sculls.

Norwegian Kjetil Borch dominated the race from the outside lane six and finished in 6m 38.310s, nearly seven seconds ahead of Manson. Czech Republic's Ondrej Synek was second, with Mindaugas Griskonis of Lithuania claiming bronze.

It is the second straight year Manson, 28, has failed to medal at the world rowing championships.

Last year, New Zealand finished second on the medal table with seven (three gold, three silver, one bronze) medals, but this year finished 18th.
