Sailing: Dunning Beck, Gunn challenge Burling & Tuke's 49er crown

After qualifying the 49er class for the Tokyo Olympics in August, Logan Dunning Beck and Oscar Gunn immediately considered ditching the class, when 2016 gold medallists Peter Burling and Blair Tuke announced their defence for Japan.

But it's only given the duo more drive to make the Games, starting from the World Cup event at the Olympic venue this week.

"We want to go to the Olympics and we want to win, the same as everyone else," Beck told Newshub. "The drive is strong."

The pair even considered jumping classes, after the return of multi-Olympic medallists Tuke and Burling.

But they are determined to give the America's Cup winners a run for their money.

"Those first couple of sailing sessions, they'll be a bit rusty, so it'll be a good opportunity to take a good dump on them."

Before all that, the pair will be looking to get the new season off with a bang at the same spot they could be sailing come 2020.

"There's a whole chunk of the fleet that say we could win a medal in Tokyo and we want to be the ones that pop out just at the right time," he said.

After just a year in the boat together, the pair showing they could prove to be more than a match for Tuke and Burling, winning two World Cup medals.

"Knock them off their perch, at least momentarily - they've got a lot to offer us and we've got a lot to offer them, and hopefully it'll strengthen the Kiwi team.

They're a Kiwi team that's sure set to have a battle on their hands.
